Fixed size

How to Resize a PDF to a Fixed A4, A3 or Letter Page Size

Print shops, submission systems and archives often require a specific paper size, while your PDF may have come out of a web page or a scanner at an odd size. The fixed-size tool scales every page onto the target sheet.

Presets and custom sizes

The panel offers four presets — A4, A3, A5 and Letter — that fill in the dimensions for you. You can also type your own width and height; units can be pt, mm, cm or inch and they convert automatically.

Size Millimetres Points (pt)
A4 210 × 297 mm 595.28 × 841.89
A3 297 × 420 mm 841.89 × 1190.55
A5 148 × 210 mm 419.53 × 595.28
Letter 216 × 279 mm 612 × 792

Values must be greater than 0 and no more than 10000. Page orientation is not forced — a landscape source page on a portrait target is scaled by the same rule described below.

The key point: it fits, it does not crop

The scale factor is min(target width ÷ source width, target height ÷ source height) — the smaller of the two, so the whole page lands inside the target sheet, then it is centred horizontally and vertically.

In practice nothing gets cropped. The trade-off is that whenever the source and target aspect ratios differ, you get white space.

Fixed size Fill A4
Scale factor Minimum — fits inside Maximum — fills the sheet
Crops content? No Yes, edges may be cut
Different aspect ratio White space Content cut off
Use for Printing, submission, archives Posters and photos printed full-bleed

Different aspect ratios mean white space

The usual case is a landscape page going into a portrait A4. To keep everything visible the scale is limited by width, so the content sits in a narrow band with large blank areas above and below, and the type ends up small.

To avoid that, match the target orientation to your source pages. Spread files can go through Split Landscape Spreads first.

Is the text still searchable afterwards?

Yes. The tool draws each original page onto the new one at the computed scale, so vector content and the text layer survive — you can still select, search and copy the text.

Document properties do not survive. This tool rebuilds the file structure, so Title, Author, Subject and Keywords are not carried over, and the created/modified dates become the export time. If you need both a new size and those properties, resize first and add the properties afterwards with Edit Doc Properties.

How is this different from Uniform Width?

  • Fixed size: every page becomes exactly the size you specify, whatever it was before.
  • Uniform width: no paper size is chosen — you pick a reference page and align every page to its width.
  • Fill A4: the target is A4, but the scale is the maximum, so edges may be cut.

Is the file uploaded?

No. Resizing runs in your browser and the file never leaves your device.

  • Fill A4 — scales to fill and may crop edges; for posters and photos
  • Uniform Width — aligns widths to a reference page instead of a paper size
  • Edit Doc Properties — fixed size drops properties, so add them last

Frequently asked questions

Will it crop my content?

No. The scale uses the smaller of the two ratios, so the whole page fits inside the target sheet and is centred. Anything that does not fit becomes white space rather than a crop.

Is the text still searchable and copyable?

Yes. Vector content and the text layer are preserved, so you can still select, search and copy after exporting.

What happens to a landscape page on a portrait A4?

You get white space. The scale is limited by width so nothing is cropped, leaving blank areas above and below and smaller type. Matching orientations avoids it.

What is the difference between A4 and Letter?

A4 is 210 × 297 mm; Letter is 216 × 279 mm. A4 is narrower and taller, Letter is wider and shorter — printing on the wrong stock causes misalignment.

Does resizing lose document properties?

Yes. The tool rebuilds the file structure, so metadata such as Title and Author is not inherited. Re-apply them with Edit Doc Properties after resizing.
