Page rotation
How to Rotate PDF Pages in Bulk
A backwards scan, inconsistent page orientation, reading on a phone in portrait — all need PDF rotation. It looks like a simple operation, but there is one trap: some tools only change the display angle rather than actually reflowing the page.
First, the thing that confuses everyone
The PDF spec gives each page a /Rotate entry recording how many degrees the page should be turned clockwise for display. It does not change the page's physical dimensions. That is why a page you rotated in one viewer sometimes looks un-rotated in another: some readers treat it purely as a print-orientation hint.
The reliable approach is to reflow the content — re-render each page at its new orientation and write fresh coordinates. Every viewer then agrees. The cost is a slightly larger file, since page images must be re-encoded. UniPagePDF uses this approach.
Which angle for which job
| Angle | Typical case | Page size changes? |
|---|---|---|
| 90° | Scanned sideways; portrait page wanted in landscape | Yes — width and height swap |
| 180° | Upside-down scans; duplex merges | No |
| 270° (CCW 90°) | Reverse landscape; mixed book scan directions | Yes — width and height swap |
90° and 270° change the page dimensions. A4 portrait (595×842pt) rotated 90° becomes an 842×595pt landscape page. If your real goal is printing on A4 portrait, rotation will not help — use Fill A4 instead. Rotation fixes orientation; size problems belong to size tools.
Rotating odd and even pages separately
This is the standard fix for duplex book scanning. When you scan the back of a sheet in single-sided mode, the page goes in face down, so the content comes out mirrored or upside down relative to the front. Rotate only the even pages by 180° and a single scan produces a correctly oriented document.
That is exactly what the All pages / Even pages / Odd pages selector is for, and it halves the work compared with scanning twice and merging in software.
Acrobat versus the browser
Adobe Acrobat Pro: Tools → Edit PDF → Rotate Pages, picking clockwise or counter-clockwise and a range. Acrobat writes the rotation attribute, so it is fast and the file does not grow — but some third-party readers may disagree.
UniPagePDF (browser): choose Rotate, set the angle and range, then export. Content is reflowed, so compatibility is maximal. The file grows slightly and processing time scales with page count.
macOS Preview: Tools → Rotate, page by page. Also writes the attribute, so it is impractical beyond a few dozen pages.
Common mistakes
- Rotating repeatedly until it "looks right". Some readers stack display transforms. Trust what you see after exporting and reopening.
- Using rotation to fix inconsistent sizes. A4 and Letter differ by 17.8pt — visually almost nothing. Rotation only makes it harder to judge. Use Unified Page Width for that.
- Rotating and then compressing. Rotation does not reduce file size. For that, use Compress PDF — they target entirely different causes of bulk.
Why local processing matters here
Rotation means reading and re-rendering page content. With an online tool, a copy of your contract, blueprint, or medical record ends up on someone else's server. UniPagePDF does the whole job in your browser: the file never leaves your device and disappears when you close the tab.
